A coalition of left-leaning and nonpartisan campaign finance groups are threatening a lawsuit against centrist group No Labels if it does not disclose its donors. The groups, including End Citizens United and the League of Women Voters, argue that No Labels’ refusal to reveal their donors is “disturbing and unlawful” and undermines the democratic process. No Labels, which is registered as a nonprofit, claims it does not need to disclose its donors because the candidate it supports will have to file with the FEC and disclose their financial backers. However, watchdog groups argue that No Labels is essentially acting as an unregistered political party and is violating IRS and FEC rules. The group has spent heavily to gather signatures and qualify for the ballot in multiple states. It is rumored that No Labels may back former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan in the 2024 presidential election.
